Cycling the Right Way: How NCC Keeps Riders Safe and Injury-Free

Cycling is at the heart of the Noida Cycling Club (NCC). It’s a sport that builds endurance, discipline, and camaraderie. Whether you’re a weekend rider or training for long-distance challenges, staying injury-free is essential to enjoying consistent and safe rides.

While cycling is a low-impact activity, improper posture, poor bike fit, lack of stretching, or inadequate protective gear can lead to avoidable injuries. Understanding these common injuries and how to prevent them helps every rider ride stronger, longer, and safer.

1. Knee Pain and Overuse Injuries

Why it happens:
Knee pain is one of the most common complaints among cyclists, often caused by incorrect saddle height, poor pedalling technique, or sudden increases in distance or intensity.

Ride leaders’ advice:
NCC ride leaders recommend adjusting your saddle so your knee has a slight bend at the bottom of the pedal stroke and maintaining a smooth, circular pedalling motion. Gradually increase mileage to allow your muscles and joints to adapt.

NCC habits to prevent knee injuries:
Regular club rides often start with a brief warm-up and end with group stretches targeting quadriceps, hamstrings, and hip flexors, which help prevent overuse injuries.

2. Back and Neck Strain

Why it happens:
Long rides in a fixed position, rounded shoulders, or reaching too far for the handlebars can strain the lower back and neck.

How to avoid it:
Maintain a neutral spine, relaxed shoulders, and slightly bent elbows. Adjust your handlebar height and reach, engage your core muscles and include stretching for your lower back, shoulders, and chest after rides.

NCC insight:
Ride leaders encourage posture checks during regrouping points on long rides. Proper posture is emphasised as part of the club’s commitment to sustainable, injury-free cycling.

3. Foot Numbness and Discomfort

Why it happens:
Tight shoes, poorly positioned cleats, or excessive pedal pressure can cause numbness or a burning sensation in the feet.

How to avoid it:
Wear well-fitting cycling shoes, ensure correct cleat placement, and take short breaks to restore circulation. NCC riders often use these breaks to do light foot and leg stretches.

4. Falls, Abrasions, and Road Injuries

Why they happen:
Uneven roads, gravel, wet surfaces, or sudden obstacles can lead to falls.

NCC safety norms:

  • Helmet rule: Helmets are mandatory for every ride to prevent injuries in case of a fall.
  • Protective gear: Gloves, eyewear, and padded shorts are encouraged.
  • Do Gaz Ki Doori: NCC riders are guided to maintain a safe distance of two yards from the rider ahead.
  • Ride leaders emphasise alertness, safe riding limits, and following traffic rules.

NCC habit:
Riders are trained to signal hazards and maintain group discipline to minimise accident risks.

5. Importance of Stretching

Stretching is vital for injury prevention and recovery. It improves flexibility, reduces muscle stiffness, and helps maintain proper posture.

Before the ride:

  • Light warm-up with leg swings, hip circles, and arm rotations.

After the ride:

  • Stretch the hamstrings, quadriceps, calves, hips, and lower back.
  • Gentle cooldown stretches help prevent tightness and long-term injuries.

NCC encourages consistent group stretching sessions at the end of every ride, reinforcing a culture of body care.

6. Smart Riding Habits

In addition to posture and gear, mindful riding habits make a big difference:

  • Warm up before long or intense rides.
  • Increase distance and speed progressively.
  • Stay hydrated, especially during summer rides.
  • Get adequate rest and recovery between rides.
  • Maintain your bicycle for safe performance.

NCC ride leaders model these habits and check in with participants, fostering a safe, supportive cycling environment.

Cycling should enhance your fitness, not hinder it. Most cycling injuries are preventable with correct posture, regular stretching, proper bike setup, and the right protective gear. At Noida Cycling Club, safety and sustainability in cycling are as important as performance. By riding smart, following club norms and taking care of your body, every ride can remain enjoyable, safe and fulfilling.

Ride safe. Ride strong. Ride together.

REVIEW
  • NCC - the name is synonymous with zeal and passion of the ever growing cycling community in Noida. This platform not only helps the regular riders but also aims in strengthening the amateur riders like me. It's a delight to be a part of weekend rides, which include riders from all ages. While someone has rightly mentioned: 'Four wheels move the body, two-wheels ride the soul' I would like to add to this by saying, " Riding two-wheels with engine is easy. The real power comes when you paddle and become its engine." That's what cycling does to you. Noida Cycling Club is not just a community to increase number of riders, it ensure the safety, comfort and building confidence in all its members to have a prodigious riding experience. Well done to the ride coordinators, who act as the back bone of this Club.

Aman Puri , the Chief Cycling Officer runs a great YouTube page and INCUBATES certain riders to take over the mantle from him while he develops his branded/customised biking store in Noida . There are certain issues within NCC members w.r.t leadership roles but that merely causes a rating of 4/5 nothing else. Their WhatsApp group is very strict too, think a hundred times before clicking on the link to add yourself. Thanks . Hope this helped .
